Art. 1306.3 Effect of registration for enforcement

When a child support order or income withholding order from another state or country gets filed with a Louisiana court, this is called "registering" the order. Once it's registered, Louisiana treats it just like an order that was originally issued right here in the state.

This means the registered order can be enforced the same way a Louisiana order would be enforced, using the same legal steps and procedures. If someone isn't paying support as required, the Louisiana court can take action to make them pay, just as it would with a local order.

There's an important limit, though. Louisiana courts can enforce these out-of-state or foreign orders, but they generally cannot change or modify them. As long as the original court that issued the order had proper legal authority (jurisdiction) when it made the order, Louisiana must respect those terms and simply enforce them, not rewrite them. There are some exceptions written into the broader law, but this is the general rule.
