Art. 1464 Voluntary admission of minors

If you are 16 or 17 years old, you can ask to be admitted to a treatment facility on your own. You do not need a parent or guardian to sign you in. This gives older teens the ability to seek mental health or substance abuse treatment for themselves.

Once you are admitted this way, you get the same rights as an adult patient. This means the facility must treat you with the same legal protections and respect for your choices that adult patients receive.

The doctor who admits you gets to decide how the admission works. They can choose either a formal or informal process, based on rules explained elsewhere in this law. Either way, the choice of admission type is up to the admitting physician, not the minor.
