Art. 1642 Financial responsibility for children

Here's what this rule means for families and agencies involved in placing a child across state lines.

When a child is placed in another state under this compact, the question of who pays for the child's care follows Article 1629. That article lays out the basic rules for figuring out financial responsibility, and those rules apply first in these cases.

If the person or agency responsible for payment does not pay fully, or stops paying partway through, this rule allows other laws to be used to deal with the problem. In other words, Article 1629 is not the only tool available. If someone falls behind on payments or fails to pay at all, courts and agencies can turn to other legal options to fix the situation and make sure the child's needs are covered.

This rule mainly gives legal backup for enforcement. It confirms that if the standard payment plan breaks down, there are still ways to hold the responsible party accountable.
