Art. 653 Restrictive orders; discovery

If you're involved in a juvenile court case, both sides usually have the right to get information from each other before the hearing. This is called discovery. But this rule lets the judge limit or restrict that process if there's a good reason to do so, like protecting confidential information under state privacy laws (R.S. 46:56).

To ask for these limits, someone has to file a written request explaining why it's needed. In some cases, if fairness requires it, this request can be made without notifying the other side first (called an "ex parte" request).

If the judge decides to limit discovery, the written request explaining the reason gets sealed, meaning it's kept private and not open to public viewing. However, it still becomes part of the official case file, so it's preserved for the record even though the public can't see it.
