Art. 721 Home study report

When someone wants to become a child's legal guardian, the state has to check out their home first. A caseworker visits and looks into the person's background, then writes up a private report for the judge about what they found.

This report covers a few key things. It looks at whether the proposed guardian is honest and financially stable enough to care for the child. It also checks the home itself, things like safety, cleanliness, and whether it's a good fit for the child's needs. The caseworker also looks at the child's own physical and mental health, and how the child feels about living with this guardian.

Finally, the report has to include a backup plan. If something happens to the guardian and they can no longer take care of the child, there needs to be a plan already in place for what happens next. The judge uses this whole report to decide if the guardianship is a good idea for the child.
