Art. 729 Persons subject to proceedings

When a child needs help or services, the juvenile court is the only court that can handle the case at first. This means no other court can step in and decide these matters instead. The juvenile court has full authority to hear the case from the start.

This rule covers more than just the child. It also applies to the child's caretaker and other family members if they are connected to the situation. The court can also involve workers from public agencies or institutions if those agencies are supposed to provide services the child needs but aren't doing so.
