Art. 892 Disposition hearing; time

Before a judge decides what happens to a child in a juvenile case, the court must hold a hearing called a disposition hearing. This hearing happens after the court has already decided the child committed the offense (this earlier step is called adjudication).

The disposition hearing can happen right away, immediately after the adjudication decision. But if it doesn't happen right away, the law says it must happen within 30 days after the adjudication.

There is some flexibility built into this rule. If there's a good reason, the court can push the hearing back past the 30 day mark. This gives judges room to handle situations like needing more time to gather information about the child before deciding on next steps, while still making sure cases don't drag on without a clear reason.
