Art. 957 Appointment of counsel

If a child is involved in a case in juvenile court, the judge or traffic referee has the power to appoint a lawyer to represent that child. This happens when the judge or referee decides that having a lawyer is needed to make sure the case is handled fairly.

The decision to appoint a lawyer is based on what justice requires in that specific situation. This means the court looks at the child's circumstances and the nature of the case to decide if a lawyer should be assigned to help protect the child's rights and interests throughout the legal process.

This rule gives courts flexibility. It does not list exact situations where a lawyer must be appointed. Instead, it trusts the judge or referee to recognize when a child needs legal help and to act on that need.
