Art. 1006 Alternative defenses

When you file an answer to a lawsuit, you're allowed to give more than one defense, even if those defenses don't fit together or even contradict each other. For example, you could argue that you never signed a contract, and also argue that if you did sign it, you didn't break any of its terms. The law lets you make both arguments at once, even though they can't both be true at the same time.

This gives you room to protect yourself when you're not sure yet which argument will work best, or when the facts are still being sorted out. But there's a catch: everything you claim in your answer still has to meet the honesty and good-faith rules under Article 863. That means you can't just throw out any defense you want. You still need a real, reasonable basis for each one you raise, even if some of them contradict each other.
