Art. 1843 Default judgment

If someone sues you and you don't respond in time, the other side can ask the court to rule against you automatically. This is called a default judgment. It happens when a defendant fails to file an answer or other legal response within the deadline set by law.

Basically, the court assumes that since you didn't show up to defend yourself, you have no objection to what the other side is asking for. The judge can then grant the plaintiff's request without hearing your side of the story.

This is why it's so important to respond to a lawsuit quickly. If you get sued and miss your deadline to answer, you could lose the case automatically, even if you actually had a good defense. Once a default judgment is entered, it can be hard (though not always impossible) to undo, so acting fast after being served with a lawsuit really matters.
