Art. 2082 Definition of appeal

If you lose part or all of your case in a trial court, you have the right to ask a higher court to look at what happened. This is called an appeal. It lets you challenge the trial court's decision if you think it was wrong.

When you appeal, you are asking the appellate court to review the judgment. The higher court can agree with the trial court and leave the decision alone, or it can change the decision in different ways. It might revise part of the ruling, modify it, set it aside completely, or reverse it entirely.

This right to appeal belongs to any party involved in the case, not just one side. It gives people a way to make sure a trial court's decision was fair and correct before it becomes final.
