Art. 2375 Purchaser's liability; property subject to inferior mortgages

When you buy property at a sheriff's sale, you only have to pay the price you bid. That's the full extent of what you owe as the buyer.

You must pay this full amount to the sheriff, even if there are other mortgages or liens on the property. As long as those other debts rank below the debt of the creditor who forced the sale, they don't add to what you owe. The sheriff will handle sorting out who gets paid from the money you hand over, but that's not your problem as the buyer.
