Art. 322 Exercises civil functions only in own parish; exception

Here's a plain English summary of this rule:

A sheriff can only do his official civil job duties within the parish where he was elected. He does not have the authority to carry out these duties in other parishes.

There is one exception to this rule, which is spelled out in a different rule, Article 1291. Outside of that specific exception, a sheriff's power to act stays limited to his own parish.

This matters because it affects things like serving legal papers or carrying out court orders. If someone needs a sheriff to take action in a case, that sheriff generally must be the one from the parish where the action needs to happen, not a sheriff from somewhere else.
