Art. 324 Returns on process served, and writs and judgments executed

When a sheriff delivers court papers like citations, summons, subpoenas, or other legal notices, they have to report back to the court about it. This report is called a "return." It tells the court exactly when the papers were delivered and how they were delivered, such as handed directly to the person or left at their home.

The same rule applies when a sheriff carries out a court order, writ, or judgment. The sheriff must let the court know the date the action happened and the method used to complete it.

This process matters because it creates an official record. The court and everyone involved in the case can look at this record to confirm that someone was properly notified or that a court order was actually carried out, and when that happened.
