Art. 3993 Venue for judicial emancipation

If you want to ask a court to legally free a minor from parental control (this is called judicial emancipation), you need to file the case in the right location. The correct place to file is the parish where the person involved actually lives, or is "domiciled."

This means you cannot just pick any parish in Louisiana to file this type of case. You have to file it where the party lives on a permanent basis. This makes sure the case is handled by a court that has a real connection to the person asking for emancipation.
