Art. 4061 Natural tutor; general obligations

If a parent is going to serve as the natural tutor for their child (meaning they will manage the child's property and legal affairs), they have to complete a few steps first before they can officially start handling that role.

First, the parent must take an oath promising to carry out the duties of the job honestly and responsibly. Next, they need to have an inventory taken or a detailed list made of the child's property. This creates an official record of what the child owns.

Finally, the parent must either register a legal mortgage that protects the child's interests, or provide some other form of security as required by law. This step is meant to protect the child's property in case something goes wrong while the parent is managing it. All of these steps have to happen before the parent can legally begin acting as tutor for the child.
