Art. 4916 Venue; justice of the peace courts

Justice of the peace courts follow the same basic rules that decide where a lawsuit can be filed as other Louisiana courts do. These rules are found in Articles 41 through 45 and Articles 71 through 79 of the state's civil procedure laws. Those articles normally talk about which "parish" a case belongs in, but for justice of the peace courts, the word "parish" instead means the specific area that particular court covers.

In practical terms, this means if you're filing a case in justice of the peace court, you look at the same general rules everyone else uses to figure out the right location for a lawsuit. The only difference is you swap out the idea of a parish for the smaller district that the justice of the peace actually has authority over. This keeps the filing rules consistent across different types of courts while fitting the smaller scale of justice of the peace courts.
