Art. 892 Alternative causes of action

When someone files a lawsuit in Louisiana, they can list more than one legal claim at the same time, even if those claims don't fit together logically or even contradict each other. For example, a person could argue "the contract was never valid" and also argue "if the contract was valid, the other side broke it" in the same lawsuit. The law allows this kind of backup argument so people don't lose their chance to make a valid claim just because they're unsure which legal theory will win.

There's one exception to this rule, found in a different article (3657), which deals with certain property disputes. Also, even though people can make these alternative or conflicting claims, they still have to follow the honesty and good-faith requirements in Article 863. That means every claim listed, even the backup ones, must have some real legal or factual basis. People can't just make up contradictory claims with no support behind them.
