Art. 1001.1 Duties of the sheriff; other law enforcement agencies

Sheriffs have certain jobs to do under this part of the law, like serving papers, making arrests, or handling other court-related tasks. This rule says a sheriff doesn't have to do these jobs alone. The sheriff can make a deal with another law enforcement agency, like a local police department, and let them take over those duties instead.

This gives sheriffs flexibility. If it makes more sense for another agency to handle certain tasks, the sheriff can hand off that responsibility through an agreement. The rule applies even if other laws might normally say otherwise, meaning this option is available to sheriffs regardless of what other rules might suggest.

For everyday people, this means the officer who shows up to serve papers or carry out other court duties might work for a different agency, not just the sheriff's office. The responsibility is still being met, just possibly by a different law enforcement group under an arrangement with the sheriff.
