Art. 1003.1 Public records; exception

Records that police or sheriffs keep under this part of the law are kept private. This means the usual rule that lets the public request and see government records does not apply here. Even though public records laws normally give people broad access to government documents, this rule creates a special exception.

In practical terms, if you try to request these specific law enforcement records under the Public Records Law, the agency can refuse to hand them over. The law treats them as confidential no matter what other rules might otherwise say about public access. This protects certain sensitive information held by police and sheriffs from being released to the general public.
