Art. 166 Receipt for seized property

When police take property from you because of a search warrant, they have to give you a written receipt. This receipt needs to list out exactly what was taken, not just a vague description. It protects you by creating a clear record of what officers removed from your home or property.

If you aren't there when the search happens, the officer can't just leave without documenting anything. Instead, they must leave the receipt at the location where they found and took the property. This way, you'll know what was seized even if you weren't present, and there's proof of exactly what law enforcement removed.

This rule exists to prevent disputes later about what was taken or whether items went missing during a search. Having a detailed, written record protects both the person whose property was seized and the police, since everyone can point to the same document if questions come up afterward.
