Art. 280 Immunity of extradited person from service of process in civil actions

If someone is brought into Louisiana to face criminal charges through extradition, they get some protection from being pulled into civil lawsuits while that criminal case is still pending. They can't be served with civil legal papers until their criminal case is resolved.

This protection ends once the person is convicted or pleads guilty. If instead they are found not guilty or the charges are dropped, the protection lasts a little longer, giving them three extra days before anyone can serve them with civil papers.

The idea behind this rule is fairness. Someone brought to the state to answer criminal charges shouldn't also have to deal with being served in an unrelated civil case at the same time. It gives them a chance to handle the criminal matter first before facing other legal issues.
