Art. 4 Number; sex

This rule is about how to read the words used in Louisiana's criminal court laws. It says that unless it's obvious from the situation that something else is meant, singular and plural words can be swapped. So if a law talks about "a person," it also means "persons," and if it says "witnesses," it also can mean just one witness.

The same idea applies to gender. If a law uses "he," it also means "she," and the other way around. This keeps people from arguing that a law doesn't apply to them just because of wording about number or gender. It makes sure the laws are read fairly and apply the way they were meant to, no matter how many people are involved or what their gender is.
