Art. 514 Minute entry regarding counsel

When someone is charged with a crime, the court has to keep a written record showing what happened with their right to a lawyer. This record, called the minutes, must show one of two things happened.

Either the defendant actually had a lawyer representing them, or the court told the defendant about their right to have a lawyer, including the right to get a free court-appointed lawyer if they couldn't afford one. If the defendant chose to give up that right and go without a lawyer, the minutes must show that this happened too.

This rule protects defendants by making sure there's a clear record of what happened with their right to legal help. If the court never told someone about their right to a lawyer, or never wrote down that they gave up that right, this can become a problem for the case later on. It's a paperwork safeguard that helps prove someone's rights were respected during the court process.
