Art. 575.1 Suspension of time limitations; crimes against the Firefighters' Retirement System

If someone files a civil lawsuit under R.S. 11:2261.1(C), the clock stops running on the time limits that normally apply to criminal cases in this Chapter. This means prosecutors get extra time to bring charges, because the deadline pauses while that civil suit is pending.

This rule applies specifically to crimes connected to the Firefighters' Retirement System, like fraud or other wrongdoing involving that system. The idea is to make sure a related civil case doesn't cause prosecutors to run out of time to file criminal charges. Once the civil suit is filed, the criminal time limit is put on hold until that suit is resolved or otherwise no longer pending.
