Art. 715 Continuance to definite date or indefinitely

When a judge agrees to postpone a trial or hearing, the judge is supposed to pick a new date right then, as long as it's realistic to do so. This keeps the case moving forward instead of leaving it stuck with no clear next step.

There's one exception. If both sides, the prosecution and the defense, agree that they don't want a new date set yet, the judge doesn't have to set one. This might happen if there's some uncertainty about scheduling or if both sides need more time before they can commit to a date.

For anyone involved in a case, this means a delay shouldn't turn into an open-ended wait. You should walk away from the hearing knowing when things will pick back up again, unless everyone involved has agreed to leave that question open for now.
