Art. 813 Improper verdict; procedure

When a jury comes back with a verdict, the judge has to check that it's filled out correctly and actually matches the charges in the case. If the judge finds a problem, like the verdict doesn't make sense or doesn't respond to what the defendant was actually charged with, the judge cannot accept it.

Instead, the judge sends the jury back to keep deliberating. Before they go back, the judge gives them spoken instructions explaining what needs to be fixed. The judge also has to read the incorrect verdict out loud and write down the specific reasons why it was rejected.

This process protects the defendant's rights by making sure the final verdict is clear, valid, and actually matches the charges being decided. It also creates a record showing exactly what went wrong and how the judge handled it, which matters if the case is ever appealed later.
