Art. 911 Right to appeal from judgment

If you're involved in a criminal case in Louisiana, either side (the person charged or the state) can ask a higher court to review a judgment or ruling made in the case. This is called an appeal. The higher court looks at what happened in the original case to make sure it was handled correctly.

You don't have to pay any money upfront to file this kind of appeal. Some types of appeals in other situations require you to post a bond, but that's not the case here. This means the right to appeal isn't blocked just because someone can't afford to pay a fee.

This rule matters because it guarantees both sides have a fair shot at getting a second look from a higher court if they believe a mistake was made. It also removes a money barrier that could otherwise stop someone from appealing.
