Rule 2.101 Form and Commencement of Action

In Michigan, all civil lawsuits are called "civil actions." It does not matter what type of dispute you have. Whether you are suing over a car accident, a contract, or something else, the case has the same basic name and structure.

To start a lawsuit, you must file a complaint with the court. A complaint is a written document that explains who you are, who you are suing, and why. The moment you file that complaint, your case officially begins.
