Rule 5.735 Adjournment

If you need to postpone a court hearing in Michigan, you cannot just ask to delay it without a real reason. The court will only allow a postponement if you have good cause, meaning a legitimate reason why you cannot move forward as scheduled.

When you ask for a postponement, you must either write down your reason and send it to the court and the other side's attorney, or you must explain your reason out loud during a court session so it becomes part of the official record. You cannot make this request informally or keep your reason private.
