Rule 703 Bases of an Expert’s Opinion Testimony

When someone is called as an expert witness in a Michigan court, they can share their opinion based on facts or information from the case. That information can come from things they personally saw or reviewed, or from facts that other people told them about.

The catch is that the facts the expert relies on must actually be part of the court record. The judge can allow the supporting facts to be entered into evidence later in the trial if they have not been presented yet.
