Rule 6 Correction of Clerical Errors

If there's a small clerical mistake in a judgment, order, or other court document, the judge can fix it. This might be something like a typo, a wrong date, or a simple mistake in copying down information. Either a party in the case can ask the judge to fix it, or the judge can catch the mistake and correct it without anyone asking.

Before the judge fixes anything, everyone involved in the case has to be told about it first. This gives all parties a chance to know what's being changed and why.

There's also a time limit on this. The judge can only make these corrections before the case goes up on appeal. Once the court clerk sends the official case record to the higher court, the judge loses the ability to make these fixes.
