Rule 30.18 Assignment - Death Penalty Cases

When someone is sentenced to death, the appeal in their case does not go to a small panel of judges. Instead, the full Missouri Supreme Court hears and decides it. This means every judge on the court takes part in reviewing the case, rather than leaving it to just a few of them.

This rule exists because death penalty cases carry the highest possible stakes. Having the entire court weigh in helps make sure the decision gets full attention and reflects the views of all the judges, not just a subset of them.
