Rule 37.11 Writs - Process - Return

When a police officer or other official is given a court document to deliver (like a summons or order), they have to hand it over to the right person and then report back to the court in writing. This written report is called a "return of service."

The report needs to include three things: when the document was delivered, where it was delivered, and how it was delivered. The officer must sign this report and turn it in to the court clerk.

This rule matters because it creates a paper trail proving someone was properly notified about their case. If there's ever a question about whether a person actually received a court document, this written return is the proof the court relies on.
