Here's what this rule means in simple terms.
If the wrong people get added to a lawsuit, or someone who should be included gets left out, the case does not get thrown out because of that mistake. Courts understand that sometimes the parties in a case are not exactly right at the start.
Instead of dismissing the whole case, the judge can fix the problem. The judge can add a person who needs to be part of the case, or remove someone who should not be there. This can happen because someone asks for it, or the judge can decide to do it without anyone asking.
The judge also has the power to split up claims. If a case involves multiple claims against different people, the judge can separate them out so each claim gets handled properly. The goal is to keep cases fair and organized, even when the original list of parties was not quite right.
