When you hire a lawyer, you have the right to expect they know what they're doing. Your lawyer needs to have enough legal knowledge and skill to handle your case properly. They also need to prepare well and be thorough, not just wing it.
This means your lawyer should understand the laws that apply to your situation. If your case involves an area of law they don't know much about, they need to study up on it or get help before taking you on as a client. They can't just take your case and figure things out as they go if that puts your interests at risk.
Being thorough also matters just as much as knowing the law. A lawyer who understands the law but doesn't prepare your case carefully, doesn't return your calls, or misses deadlines is not giving you competent help. In short, this rule means your lawyer owes you real effort, real knowledge, and real preparation, not just a law degree hanging on the wall.
