Rule 2:10-4 Convictions for Contempt

If a court finds someone guilty of contempt, that decision can be appealed. Contempt means a judge punished someone for disobeying a court order or disrupting court proceedings.

When you appeal a contempt conviction, the higher court can look at both the facts of what happened and whether the law was applied correctly. This gives the appeals court more power than in some other types of appeals, where only legal questions can be reviewed.

The appeals court can change the outcome in whatever way it thinks is fair. It can uphold the punishment, reduce it, throw it out, or order something different based on the situation.
