Rule 5:9-2 Service

When someone files a custody case, the court papers must be properly delivered to every person who currently has custody of the child. This means each custodial person must receive official notice of the case.

The delivery must follow the same rules used for serving papers in other civil cases in New Jersey, which are spelled out in Rule 4:4. Those rules cover how papers can be handed directly to a person, left at their home, or delivered in other approved ways when direct service is not possible.
