Rule 1:40-9 Civil Arbitration

Civil court cases in New Jersey can be sent to arbitration instead of going straight to a judge. Each county's court system runs its own arbitration program as part of a broader effort to resolve disputes outside of a traditional courtroom.

If your civil case is selected for arbitration, the process will follow the steps laid out in Rule 4:21A, which covers how civil arbitration works in detail. This includes how hearings are held, who serves as the arbitrator, and what happens after a decision is made.
