Rule 4.1 Truthfulness In Statements To Others

This rule says a lawyer cannot lie about important facts or law when dealing with people outside their own client, like opposing parties, witnesses, or other lawyers. If a lawyer knows something is false and states it anyway to help their client's case, that's a violation.

The key word here is "knowingly." A lawyer breaks this rule only if they know a statement is false when they make it. If a lawyer honestly believes something is true and it later turns out to be wrong, that's not the same as lying on purpose.
