§ 207.8 Removal of papers

Once a document or record gets filed with the Surrogate's Court, it has to stay there. Nobody can take it out of the courthouse unless the Surrogate or the court clerk gives written permission first.

If you're a party in a case or an attorney and you need to look at these records or copy information from them, the court will set up a specific place for you to do that work. This means you can review or transcribe documents, but you'll need to do it on-site rather than checking them out and taking them elsewhere.

This rule exists to protect court records from getting lost, damaged, or misplaced. By keeping everything in the courthouse and requiring special permission for removal, the court makes sure important documents stay safe and available for everyone who needs them.
