Rule 403 Excluding Relevant Evidence for Prejudice, Confusion, Waste of Time, or Other Reasons

A judge can keep out evidence even if it's relevant to the case. This happens when the evidence causes more problems than it's worth. For example, if evidence is likely to make the jury angry or emotional instead of helping them think clearly about the facts, the judge can block it.

The judge also has the power to exclude evidence that would confuse the jury or lead them in the wrong direction. This includes evidence that takes too long to present, repeats points already made, or drags out the trial without adding anything new. The goal is to keep the trial focused and fair.

What this means for you is that just because evidence is technically related to your case doesn't mean it will be allowed in court. If the other side tries to bring in something that seems designed to stir up emotions, confuse the jury, or waste everyone's time, your lawyer can ask the judge to keep it out. The judge decides by weighing how helpful the evidence is against the risks it creates.
