## Rule 46: Objecting to a Ruling or Order

You don't need to make a formal "exception" to disagree with something a judge decides during your case. In the past, courts required specific formal language to preserve your right to challenge a ruling later. This rule gets rid of that requirement.

Instead, all you need to do is tell the court clearly what you want it to do, or what you're objecting to, and why. As long as you explain your position and your reasons at the time, you've protected your right to raise the issue later if needed.

The rule also protects you if you didn't get a chance to object in the first place. If the court made a ruling and you had no opportunity to speak up about it at that moment, you don't lose your rights just because you stayed silent. You won't be punished later for not objecting when there was no real chance to do so.
