Rule 71 Enforcing Relief For or Against a Nonparty

If a court order gives some benefit to someone who isn't officially part of the lawsuit, or if the order needs to be enforced against someone who isn't a party, the same rules apply as if they were a party. This means the court treats that outside person the same way it would treat someone who was actually suing or being sued in the case.

In practical terms, this matters when a court decision affects people beyond just the plaintiff and defendant. For example, if a judge orders something that benefits a third party, that person can enforce the order using the normal court procedures, even though they never filed the lawsuit themselves. The same goes the other way around: if an order needs to be enforced against someone who wasn't originally part of the case, the court can still make them follow it using standard enforcement methods.

This rule exists so that people don't fall through the cracks just because they weren't formally listed as a party in the case. It keeps the enforcement process consistent, whether you were part of the original lawsuit or not.
