Rule 7 Court's Discretion

Sometimes a juvenile case comes up with a question that these rules don't clearly answer. When that happens, the judge gets to decide the best way to handle it. The judge's main job is to move the case forward in a way that is fair and quick, while also looking out for what's best for both the child and the public.

The judge also has to make sure the child isn't hurt by being young or by not knowing how to speak up for themselves. Kids often don't understand legal proceedings well, so the court has to watch out for that and make adjustments if needed.

If the judge thinks it's necessary, they can appoint someone to represent the child's interests in the case. This can happen even if the child doesn't want that person involved. The point is to protect the child, even when the child themselves might disagree with how that protection looks.
