A continuance means postponing a court date to a later time. Ohio courts do not give these out easily. A judge will only delay a case when it is truly needed to make sure everyone is treated fairly.
In cases where a young person is accused of a crime, victims have special rights when a delay is requested. If a victim has asked to be kept informed, the prosecutor must tell them about any request to push back the case. The victim can then speak up if they disagree with the delay.
If a victim objects, the judge can still grant the continuance, but only if the delay makes sense given the situation or serves justice. The judge must also explain the reason for the delay either out loud in court or in writing.
