§ 1779 Setting the trial date — Continuances.

Once discovery is finished, either side can ask the court to set a trial date. The court must schedule the trial within 90 days after discovery ends. This keeps cases moving forward instead of sitting without a clear timeline.

The judge does have some room to delay things if needed. The court can push back the trial date twice, but these delays can't add up to more than 60 days total. This means there's a limit on how long a case can be dragged out through continuances, even if both sides or the judge want more time.

For anyone involved in a lawsuit, this rule means you can expect your trial to happen within a reasonably predictable window after discovery wraps up. It also means that while some delay is possible, the law puts a cap on it so cases don't get stuck in limbo indefinitely.
