§ 2607 Who may impeach.

Any side in a case can challenge a witness's honesty or believability, even if that witness was called to testify by that same side. In other words, if you bring a witness to court to support your case, you're not stuck defending everything they say. If they say something that surprises you, contradicts other facts, or turns out to be wrong, you can still point out problems with their testimony.

This rule exists because sometimes a witness doesn't say what you expected, or new information comes up that makes their statements look questionable. Before this kind of rule existed, some courts made it hard for a party to question their own witness's credibility. This rule removes that restriction and treats all witnesses the same way, no matter who called them to the stand.
