§ 2610 Religious beliefs or opinions.

Courts don't allow a witness's religious beliefs or opinions to be used as evidence about whether they are telling the truth. It doesn't matter what a witness believes about religion or whether they follow any particular faith at all. Lawyers cannot bring this up in court to make a witness seem more trustworthy or less trustworthy to the judge or jury.

This rule exists to keep trials focused on the facts of the case, not on a person's personal faith or lack of it. A witness's religious views have nothing to do with whether they are being honest on the witness stand. So courts keep this kind of information out of the case entirely when it's being used for this purpose.
