Here's what this rule means for jury selection in a civil case.

The plaintiff goes first when it comes to challenging jurors for cause. This means the plaintiff's side gets to raise any concerns about a juror being unfit to serve, like if the juror knows someone involved in the case or has a bias. After the plaintiff finishes, the defendant gets the same chance to challenge jurors for cause.

Once both sides are done with challenges for cause, they move on to peremptory challenges. These are challenges where a side can dismiss a juror without giving a reason. The plaintiff and defendant take turns, going back and forth, each removing one juror at a time.

Each side gets up to three peremptory challenges total, and no more. So by the end of this process, each side will have had the chance to remove up to three jurors without needing to explain why, on top of any jurors removed earlier for cause.
